In particular, on first reading, I didn’t pay much attention to the irritating and self-important istpria brother, so his actual importance came as something of a shock. To be sure about her suspicions, Alma leaves a note on Isaac’s door asking who the writer of the novel is.
The young boy follows the girl to America only to find out that she is already married and the child does not know that he is the father. Every character is profoundly affected by it. But I think I recall that she was drawing him from his back side, so maybe she never really took a good look at his face. Staring out the window, Litvinoff imagined the two thousand copies of Istora History of Love as a flock of two thousand homing pigeons that could flap their wings and return to him to report on how many tears shed, how many laughs, how many passages read aloud, how many cruel closings of the cover after reading barely a page, how many never opened at all.
It was Alma who won me over.
